Meditate
Written by Masi Alessandro

We all feel we are balanced, measured and mature... until we find a knot in our shoelaces! We start to try the 'quick untie' which appears as if our fingers are pulling at a ball of string from every direction waiting for the 'loose loop' to make itself known then pull it victoriously expecting the loose end to completely unravel the rest of the knot - and then start retying the knot in our shoes from the beginning, but sometimes pulling it only serves to tighten a different part of it making the whole situation worse, at this point we start to get a bit angry and thinking about the bus we wanted to catch and our fumbling fingers aren't gentle anymore. As we continue fumbling around with this tiny but increasing annoying knot that now has us contemplating scissors and new laces at the shoe store by the bus station, we become increasingly enraged by a piece of string that may ruin the beginning of our day!

By the way folks, that's us being 'balanced, measured and mature'! And won't stop there! When we get to the office and a cheery unsuspecting secretary greets us asking how's our morning, our silent glare delivers the answer.

We need to not personalise stuff that happens to us and acquire a bit of objectivity and insight. If we can surrender to our internal rhythms supplied happily by our heart and our breathing. You don't even need music - in fact in the beginning of learning how to meditate, it even helps by drowning out the little disturbing noises around, like street traffic etc.

meditate What's that you said - meditation?

Yes, it's a simple exercise for training your mind and body. We are focusing on you in a very natural way without all the religious, mystical stuff - just you and your everyday life. Here is how my method works - it's easy and I've developed it over 30 years.

You simply wear easy clothes, like pyjamas with nothing on your feet and choose a dimly lit room making preparations not to be disturbed for an hour - the exercise is one half hour with another half hour to completely become alert and ready for the outside world. (In fact, it's a great habit to do this when you wake up from a night's sleep; you shouldn't just leap out of bed instantly; it's bad for the nervous system.)

Sit on your bed or comfortable chair cross-legged and simply begin to be aware of your breathing and beginning to rock with it.

1] As you exhale through your mouth, you rock gently forward, listening to your breath.

2] As you inhale through your nose, rock gently back, listening to you breath.

The most important part is to become part of a motion so that all parts of your body and mind harmonise and work as one, becoming one in motion, feeling, sound and sensation.

As this one/two dance is allowed to overcome you and become trance-like, it is quietly forgotten consciously and becomes automatic or unconscious. With your body self-hypnotised, your mind is very free to focus calmly on matters of importance such as daily occurrences, which, even if stressful, you'll be able to focus on with more indifference and tranquillity then usual and be able to view difficult situations from a completely different viewpoint thereby reducing their 'threaten factor' and assisting in revealing an easy solution.

Or at this point you could instead focus deeper in your mind allowing yourself colours and perhaps visions and messages from your deeper self to surface - but this an area you explore only after you've achieved a level of efficiency with basic meditation.

Please do the above exercise twice daily finishing at least an hour before any major activity to allow yourself to become fully alert.

While you should usually in the start of your meditation regime play consistent rhythmic music, you will find as your abilities to enter this state of unity with the self that you will be able to reach a naturally calm level automatically and then you will be able to meditate with ANY music playing, and rather than trying to avoid it you will find its rhythm despite its pace and embrace it - teaching further coping skills in the process, which we will delve into further in our next session.

Enjoy your week...
